CONTEXT
Design of a flower preview app

Buds & Bouquets is creating a new flower preview app to help customers quickly and easily view suitable bouquets and add-ons for purchase, and also to allow them to customise meaningful bouquets.
PROBLEM
- Busy workers lack time to visit the florist

- Difficulties in customisability both at florists and online websites
THE CHALLENGE
"How do you design a flower preview app that enhances users' bouquet purchasing experience?"
EMPATHIZE / DISCOVERY & DEFINING
RESEARCH
I did secondary research, launched online surveys, conducted user interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I'm designing for and their needs.
Key findings
Two distinct characteristics that emerged.
- Pragmatists into suitability of bouquets as part of social norms
- Sentimentalists who expressed their own meaning through flowers & gifts were into customising their flower bouquets & add-ons
Users faced with a lack of time for bouquet purchase were less concerned about customisation
Price, quality and reliability surfaced as important considerations across users
With the findings, I developed 2 personas for the user groups to further understand users' goals and frustrations.

I defined problem statements to converge on my user research findings.
PROBLEM STATEMENTS
Sarah, who is sentimental & believes in the personal touch, needs to customise her bouquets because she wants to create & express her meaning in work, gifts & events, and strengthen her relationships.
Luke is a busy working adult who needs to quickly & easily select suitable and aesthetic bouquets to be delivered to his loved ones because he can save time to work on his career and yet be part of social norms.
I mapped Sarah's user journey to further understand how a flower customisation app would be useful in meeting user needs.

To understand current standards and identify opportunities for the new app creation, I conducted a competitive audit of the online user experience of each competitor.

Key findings

From the competitive audit, I noticed that competitors in Singapore do not have dedicated mobile apps for their customers to order bouquets through, and do not offer online previews of custom floral arrangements.

Other opportunities I identified include:
- Offer visual, audio, and multi-language accessibility features and integrate app with voice assistive technology
- Provide rewards for returning purchasers
IDEATION
With my iPad, I did quick iterations of the homepage design and the various app pages.

Taking the time to draft iterations of each app screen ensured that elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well suited to meet users needs.

For the home screen, I prioritised filter/sort/search elements for users to quickly preview suitable bouquets for purchase.

Stars were used to mark the elements of each sketch iteration that would be used in the initial digital wireframes.

As the initial design phase continued, I created digital wireframes using Figma based on feedback and findings from user research.

The low-fi prototype connected the two user flows of customising and purchasing a bouquet, and ordering a ready-made bouquet, so that the prototype could be used in a usability study with users.

I created high-fi mockups in figma.
